Planning For Opening Scene - Planning of Credits / Titles

whilst brainstorming me and my group have came up with a list of 8 titles that we think could be good titles for a post apocalyptic film as we think it would be easier to come up with a name first and work the plot form there. the list on names we have come up with is;

  • the missing -  a war film
  • vanished - a natural disaster
  • the survivors - a group of people building a community
  • asylum - a medical problem/ virus
  • new world leader -  a man leading a community
  • forsaken - a couple trying to survive
  • stalkers - a couple being stalked whist travelling
  • the end - a natural disaster
as a group we decided to use the name Forsaken as we thin this relates best to our film. I have found many fonts in the best site dafont.com this is because premiere pro does not have a wide choice of text for me to use.

These are the four font I have narrowed my choice down too using the website dafont.com. Personally I like all of theses fonts as they look eroded, destroyed and distressed. I also think this relates to the post apocalyptic genre as the destination they are first in is abandoned, distressed and  broken. I have chose to use the first font as it is my favourite compared to the rest of the others. I also like the first one as it is simple and not as dramatic as the others and it has little detail that hints at the genre of the film.

This is production lablel for out company which will be placed at the beginning of the film. we created it as a group using Photoshop after gathering many idea of what we wanted beforehand. we was inspired by a few different production company's such as new line cinema, paramount and warner bros. quite a few that we looked at involved clouds which gave it a more classic look. we used are our photos that we had took and combined them on Photoshop using a method we had learned previously in another lesson. we selected the mountains off one photo and copied it onto a picture of a sunset that we also took. after placing it in a suitable place that we were all happy with we brainstormed names and text for out production company. we decided on LEL productions which is an acronym of our names; Lauren, ewelina and Leah. we chose to have this name as we struggled to think of another name and this represented us better. we also used the stamps on Photoshop where we found the old negatives stamp which we cut down so there was 3 sections, one for each initial of the name. we then used the text tool to put the letters in each section and then too add the productions on the bottom of the stamp. the main thing that we struggled with was where to put the 'productions' text as weather we changed it to a black or white font it slightly blended into the mountains. overall I am happy with the outcome and I think it looks  very professional like the bigger ones such as warner bros, new line cinema and DreamWorks.

Planning For Opening Scene - Non copyright music

For our opening scene we are obviously not allowed use copyright music so below is a list of website that we have used in our opening scene. This list included the foley sound and the soundtracks to our opening scene as we want to edit sound such as the footsteps, wind, bird etc over the top to mask out the industry noise in the background and to give the scene a lot more depth than the echo of th sound that we had before. although we have already recorded our own Foley sound these websites are a backup in case the sound does not sound as good as we intended.
Also one the tragedy strikes we want some tense music to fit the mood and also during our film on film scene we want some happier music to again fit the scene. we will also be using non copyright music for these soundtracks.

To find the music for my opening scene I searched an the non copyright websites as well as YouTube and sound cloud. I found two tracks that I wanted to use on you tube which are the links below.

as this is a non copy right website I emailed the publishers of the tracks to ask for permission to use them.

for the first link I emailed the creator who's name is RelaxDaily on YouTube asking for permission to use his track. then for the second link I first went on his website to had a look to see if it stated anything about using his tracks and it did. the image on the bottom shows a screenshot of the website which states that if the track is not being used for commercial purposes which I am not, then you can use the clip for free whilst credited Fesliyan studios on the project. I have added his name to the credits of my film.

What is foley?

Foley is basically the sound effects that are added on post production to make the film sound better, clearer and less hollow and have less of a echo effect. The technique was created by jack foley in the 1920s and is used to enhance the audio in films as many sounds can be washed out in real life by louder sounds like traffic or overhead aeroplanes. Sounds such as footsteps, doors closing, fight scenes, pots clinking and paper flipping etc, pretty much most sound except the dialogue which is the sound recordists job to capture. By recording these sounds after we have a lot more control over the volume, timing and quality of the sound effects in the film. Its is also used to make sure only the important and relevant sounds are heard during the scene and the smaller sounds like clothes and furniture rustling are of a smaller volume so it just adds a bit of depth to the film. Foley is created with foley artist in a foley studio or stange where there are plenty of surfaces, props and objects to create the specific sounds. There will be a screen what the artists can clearly see which displays the footage that they are creating the sound for so that they can create the sounds with perfect timing. Actions that can be preformed are things like; walking, running, breaking objects, rubbing clothing or furniture, fighting or handling other types of props. There are many tips and tricks o the trade and even the most unusual objects can create the perfect sounds. For exampleusing small nuts can be used to replicate the sound or bones breaking,  using cellophane to make the sound of fire or candles burning and using a staple gun to creat the sound of a hand gun firing. More recently foley sounds are stored electronically and are used by the editors post production with the timing of the scenes. This can sound repetitive and many not work as well as the real foley artists can create but it is a less expensive and using the foley studio and artists. Even the ameture film makers can create the basic foley sound effects which will add a lot more depth into there film even if it is not used continuously throughout the film.
